Introduction

Hello readers! Welcome to The Misfit Toys. Over the course of the Spring 2012 semester you will see posts from us about a wide variety of topics such as the natural sciences, psychology, and even visual art. As weird as this may seem, considering this is an English 102 assignment, we are excited about these topics. We find them interesting, and are confident that we can find a facet in each subject that will engage you (at least, we hope). The topics might seem disjointed and odd, but the common thread we have found is that each of these elements incorporates people. What makes us work, how we work, and how we create are just a few of the questions that our blog aims to answer. Natural science allows us to explore our curiosity, psychology is the exploration of the human mind, and visual art is the expression of creativity. Since our group consists of students studying diverse majors, we maintain a wide variety of perspectives on each of the subjects this blog will address.

Although the blog is a requirement for the class, and the class a pesky requirement for graduation, we want this blog to be entertaining and fun, and our aim is to inform our readers with the most accurate and timely information we can find. As a reader, you can expect the quality of our work to be top notch, not only because we are being graded, but because we care about the assignments. Our information will be an amalgamation of professional research as well as our own experiences in order to provide you with reliable information. Additionally, we promise not to bore you with our posts, as we all know that you may have better things to do than read our blog. So, we hope you enjoy reading all of our posts, and please feel free to comment and we will answer or provide clarification as quickly as possible!

Meet your Misfit Toys authors!:

My name is Joe, I am a junior, my major is Economics. I am an international student from China, where I was taught to examine people’s facial expressions and their languages when I was very young. It, which had become my habit, then raised my interest towards film analysis and psychology. Both of them study human minds, which I consider the most beautiful, varying and ambiguous subjects in the world. Even those scholars try to theorize human minds, there are always some exceptions, and it is full of possibility to interpret people’s personalities from their behaviors in so many different ways, and I am really enjoying doing so.

My name is Catherine Auten. I am a transfer student from Appalachian State University. This is my junior year and second semester here at Carolina. I am a History major and a Politics, Philosophy and Economics minor. I have a passion for American History. I love knowing where our nation came from and predicting where it will go from here. However, I also enjoy learning about and sharing new scientific breakthroughs, especially in biology. I have taken two Biology courses in my college career and made As in both of them. In my opinion, this is a fairly big accomplishment for a History major. I find myself inspired to learn about new topics and share them everyday. What could be more interesting than how we as humans thrive, think and create?

I’m Jordan Bailey, a UNC freshman from Winston-Salem, North Carolina majoring in Journalism and considering a minor in Anthropology. I find writing to be therapeutic and my favorite creative outlet. I am fascinated by the study of people and seek to understand the complex relationships people have with each other and with society. I am especially interested in the inner workings of cultures different than my own. I have been fortunate enough to travel across the globe and have been amazed by the variations of culture throughout the world. My hope is that studying people, culture, and society will inspire my future writings. Due to my passion for writing and anthropology, I am especially excited about the prospect of writing about the humanities and social sciences.

Hello, my name is Constance Edmonds and I am a freshman attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Though we have not declared majors as of yet, I intend for mine to be Biology with a probable concentration in marine science. Since I was little I have always been fascinated by animals and have had an insane love for the ocean. I hope to become a veterinarian for marine animals one day, so my love and knowledge for them can continue to grow. I have also been dancing for 15 years and playing instruments for 10, so music and the way bodies move is also a large part of my life. The way one can express them self without using words is astounding. I would love to combine my love for both music and science by traveling and exploring the world (especially Europe). My passion is life and I intend on living it to the fullest.

Hello. I’m Ali Campbell, and I attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This is my second year at Carolina, and I’m a Dramatic Art major. I love theatre. By watching a play you are able to escape your own little world for awhile and immerse yourself in a different time and place. A play can entertain, but it can do so much more. It can motivate you, inspire you, and even make you question your own fundamental beliefs. I hope one day to work for a professional theatre company. I don’t want to act; I want to be behind the scenes working on lights or stage-managing. As of now I am enjoying my college career and all that a liberal arts education has to offer.
